ウィリアム・ヨンについて、私自身の言葉でお話しできることを大変嬉しく思います。彼は、ピアニストとしての洗練された技術もさることながら、音楽に向き合うその独特のアプローチゆえに、私が心から敬愛している音楽家です。
初めて彼のシューベルトを聴いたとき、単にピアニストが作品を演奏しているのを聴いているのではなく、彼と一緒に音楽に耳を傾けているように感じたのです。そこには、魅せるための技巧の誇示は一切ありません。彼はまるで、音楽が自然に、透明に、そして深い内的な誠実さをもって通り抜けていくための媒介のようでした。これこそが、彼が特別なピアニストと評される所以です。彼はとりわけモーツァルトとシューベルトの卓越した解釈で知られていますが、これらのレパートリーでは、均衡、呼吸、タイミング、そして真実味のすべてが重要になります。効果や技巧の陰に隠れることを許してくれない作曲家たちです。彼の演奏は、大いなる謙虚さをもってこの音楽に向き合う一方で、非常に強い内なる声も備えています。
このような理由から、彼が室内楽奏者としても引く手あまたで、多くの人々に深く愛されているのも納得です。彼にとって、音楽をつくること、耳を澄まして聴くこと、ともに呼吸を合わせること、そして音を生み出すことは、決して別々のものではありません。それらは一つの完全で完璧な体験です。彼は自分のパートを演奏するだけでなく、空間全体の音楽に耳を傾けます。反応し、支え、音楽を運び、ときにはただ音楽そのものが語るのに身を任せるのです。このような音楽性を備えた奏者は、実に稀な存在です。
とりわけ彼のシューベルトには、静かな強さと情熱が湛えられています。静寂、距離感、優しさ、そして憂愁（哀愁）が、互いに自然に寄り添って存在する余白を与えてくれるのです。その音楽はしばしば、何かを思い出しているかのように感じられます。シューベルトの音楽が必要とする「時間」と「空間」を、彼は十分に与えてくれるのです。
透明感あふれる音響で知られるTOPPANホールは、そんなウィリアム・ヨンを聴くのに最高の場所です。ピアノの音、響き、静寂、そしてホールが、一つの共有された体験へと溶け合っていくでしょう。
今回のコンサートにぜひ伺いたかったのですが、残念ながら足を運ぶことが叶いません。そこで、心からの推薦の言葉として、みなさまにこうお伝えしたいと思います。
「どうかじっくりと耳を澄まし、ゆったりと時間をかけて、ウィリアム・ヨンがシューベルトを通して開いてくれる、静かで深く人間味に満ちた世界へと身を委ね、浸ってみてください！」

I am very happy to share a few personal words about William Youn, because he is a musician I admire deeply — not only for his pianistic refinement, but for the very particular way he approaches music.

When I first heard William play Schubert, I had the feeling that I was not simply listening to a pianist performing a work. It felt much more as if I were listening to the music together with him. There was no sense of display, no wish to stand in front of the music. Rather, he seemed almost like a medium through which the music could pass — naturally, transparently, and with great inner honesty.

This, for me, is one of the qualities that makes William such a special pianist. He is especially known for his interpretations of Mozart and Schubert, repertoire in which everything depends on proportion, breathing, timing, and truthfulness. These are composers who do not allow a musician to hide behind effect. William’s playing meets this music with great humility, but also with a very strong inner voice.

I believe this is also why he is such a sought-after and beloved chamber musician. For him, music-making, listening, shared breathing, and sound are not separate things. They form one complete experience. He does not only play his part; he listens into the whole musical space. He reacts, supports, carries, and sometimes simply allows the music to speak by itself. That kind of musicianship is very rare.

His Schubert, in particular, has a quiet intensity. It does not explain too much. It allows silence, distance, tenderness, and melancholy to exist naturally next to one another. The music often feels as if it is remembering something, giving Schubert the time and space this music needs.

Toppan Hall is famous for its transparent acoustic, and I feel that this is a very special place to hear William Youn. His way of playing is one in which the piano, the sound, the silence, and the acoustic of the hall become part of one shared experience.

I wish very much that I could attend this concert myself. Since I cannot be there, I can only say this as my warmest personal recommendation: listen closely, give yourselves time, and allow William Youn to take you into the quiet, deeply human world that he opens through Schubert.
